In comparison to many other countries, Iceland has a small number of towns. A town, according to the World Bank, is a settlement of more than 5,000 people. Only about six towns in Iceland have a population of more than ten thousand people, and about ten towns have a population of five thousand or more.
Most towns in Iceland have fewer than a thousand people. But numbers have nothing to do with beauty and charm, and many towns in Iceland are breathtakingly beautiful and have fascinating stories to tell visitors.
The Greater Reykjavik area includes Iceland’s largest towns. The only exception is Akureyri, which is located in the north. In my opinion, Akureyri and my hometown, Ísafjörður, are the most beautiful towns in Iceland. I also like Reykjavik, which is now more of a city than a town.
