Borgarnes is one of the highway towns of Iceland. Borgarnes is a one-hour drive from Reykjavik and is the center for the Borgarfjordur area. Borgarfjordur is a large agricultural area and a host to some of Iceland’s best-known natural attractions and historic places.
The main economy of Borgarnes is construction, transport and providing services for the agriculture industry and tourists. In the Borgarfjordur area large clusters of summerhouses have formed and are frequently visited by their owners. Icelandic labor unions own many of the summerhouses in the area and rent them out to their members.
One of the main tourist attractions in Borgarnes is the Settlement Centre of Iceland. The aim of the Settlement Centre is to bring to life the sagas of the settlement of Iceland, the discovery of Iceland and the way of life in Iceland in the beginning. One focus of the Settlement Centre is to bring to life the story of Egill Skallagrimsson.
