Reynisfjara black sand beach is a popular destination in South Iceland. It is one of those places that is easy to understand why is so popular because it is simply fantastic.
The black sand beach is long with Dyrhólaey on one side and Reynisdrangar rocks on the other.
When we arrived in the area, there were hundreds of tourists enjoying life on the beach. The waves were innocent and you could play in the beautiful columnar basalt rocks. However it is not always so, some days you need to stay a bit further up the beach as the waves can be dangerous. However there is such magnificence to the place that it is worth a visit any day of the year.
It has been thirty years since I first came to Reynisfjara. There were no tourists, no services and no toilets. Only a road that lay by the shore. Much has changed since then. Has the change been beneficial? There is no question. Now everyone can enjoy all that this great place has to offer with minimal environmental impact.
