Agriculture and History at Holar in Hjaltadalur

Holar in Hjaltadalur are situated approximately 40 km. from Saudarkrokur and one and a half hour drive from Akureyri. It was an old bishop’s district for hundreds of years dating back to the 12th century and the chief place for the northern part of Iceland. Today Holar is an Agriculture and Tourism University.

The University of Holar offers studies in horse breeding, fish farming and tourism. The school’s goal is to provide the best education available in these subjects and the school emphasizes sustainability both in tourism and in agriculture.

In recent years the National Museum of Iceland has been in the process of searching for antiquities at Holar. The old walls without roofs can be seen from the road near Holar. The beautiful Holar Church and a farmhouse partially built of turf and rocks are some of the other points of interest for tourists.
