Jon Sigurdsson is a national hero of Icelanders. He was instrumental in finally giving Icelanders independence from the Danes in 1944.
Jon Sigurdsson was born in Hrafnseyri at Arnarfjordur in the Westfjords of Iceland. The place is now dedicated to the life and memory of Jon Sigurdsson. There is an ongoing exhibition that gives a good picture of his extraordinary life.
In December 2018 the Icelandic government appointed a committee assigned to make proposals for future activities in Hrafnseyri. The committees’ proposals are explained in detail in a recently published report.
The foundation of the vision set forth by the committee are living heritage, source of knowledge, attractive frame and coordinated governance and operations.
