Iceland has a lot of beautiful lakes. Þingvallavatn, in my opinion, is the most beautiful of all lakes, but it is not the largest. The only lake that is larger than Þingvallavatn is Þórisvatn, which is located in Iceland’s highlands.

Lögurinn is Iceland’s third largest lake, located near Egilsstaðir town, and into it runs water from the country’s largest hydropower plant, Lagarfljót. Lögurinn has a similar reputation to the Loch Ness lake in Scotland, and it was thought that a giant worm named Lagarfljótsormurinn lived there. There is no evidence of this famous worm, but there are photographs that suggest various possibilities, as in Loch Ness.

Another lake that should be mentioned is Lake Mývatn. It is one of our favorites. Lake Mývatn and its surroundings have a lot to offer, and you can spend a long time there for walks and excursions. With the lava cities by the lake and the steam that rises from the ground in the immediate vicinity, the environment is one-of-a-kind. Lake Mývatn has an otherworldly feel to it at times.
