It can be said that the main characteristics of the Westfjords are the sea, the mountains, the calm and the interplay of light and darkness. When all these characteristics occur at the same moment, the magic happens.
This is one of my favorite places in Isafjordur town. It is not because of the worn out pier with rusty pipes, but rather the view of the shallow frozen sea, mountains and the sun setting behind them. However the rusty pipes are team players and sometimes they look good as well.
The shallow waters of Isafjordur fjord freeze quickly because of fresh water river that flows into it. This makes the ice very smooth, at least to watch.
