Hofsos is a small village of about 170 inhabitants, located in the eastern part of the Skagafjordur region. It is about an hour’s drive from road no. 1 via Saudarkrokur and one and a half hour’s drive from Akureyri.
The village is worth the visit if only to see the Icelandic Emigration Center and swim in a new beautifully situated swimming pool. The Emigration Center is situated in the renovated old Co-op and other buildings close by.
The center has a few exhibits telling the story of the Icelandic people who emigrated to North America. Last time we visited it housed an exhibit on the life and works of the Markerville poet Stephan Stephansson.
The village Hofsos was a trading post in the past and the museum’s buildings are in the style of the Old Warehouse which gives the old village back the feel of the trading center of days gone by.
