Icelandic Weather: Hoping for the Best or Preparing for the Worst

Today’s focus is on Icelandic weather. Yesterday, the weather in the southern part of the country was extremely bad. Strong winds, cold temperatures, and heavy rain. Many people had to be rescued from the highlands, and there were a few accidents due to bad weather.

A weather warning had been issued the day before, and it was clear from weather forecasts that bad weather was expected in the South. Long-term weather forecasts may be unreliable, but weather forecasts for the next 1-2 days are very reliable. As a result, weather warnings should be taken seriously.

Those who had to save were either hoping that the weather would not be as bad as predicted, or they were unaware of the weather warnings. According to reports, some were ill-equipped for mountaineering. Many people may have hoped for the best but were unprepared for the worst. The Icelandic rain is cold, and when the temperature drops below freezing, it becomes sleet, making it difficult to find appropriate clothing and quickly become soaked to the bone.

If there is one thing that constantly changes in this world, it is the Icelandic weather. There is a reason why Icelanders have hundreds of words for different weather conditions. If a weather warning is issued in the area where you intend to travel, you should take it seriously and reconsider your travel plans. If you still intend to travel, you can at least prepare as thoroughly as possible. When it comes to Icelandic weather, we say don’t be a fool.

Icelandic weather produces many waterfalls and rainbows, but it also brings challenges; storms with high winds and rain or snow are common, even in summer, and weather changes can be abrupt. So, pack for all four seasons, make flexible plans and check out the Safe Travel and Icelandic Met Office websites before you go.
