Iceland’s Westfjords are remarkable in their own right for a number of reasons. This area of Iceland is truly one of a kind because of its stunning natural beauty, many places to enjoy peace and quiet, and unique history and culture. For each of the eight reasons listed below, I believe it would be worthwhile to travel to the Westfjords of Iceland.
- Iceland’s Westfjords are renowned for the rough and stunning landscapes that can be found in these parts of the country. The area is known for its rocky cliffs along the coast, deep fjords, and steep mountains. During the warmer months of the year, the cliffs play host to the nesting of thousands upon thousands of seabirds, which can be observed. The trek up to the summit of the mountains can be strenuous due to the steep cliffs, but once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the fjords and the ocean below.
- Fjords are long and narrow inlets of the sea that are bordered by steep mountains, and they offer a breathtaking view of both the water and the mountains. Because the water in the fjords is so transparent, tourists have a good chance of seeing marine mammals like seals, whales, and dolphins swimming around in the ocean near the shores.
- The Westfjords are one of the least visited locations in Iceland, which makes it a great destination for those who are looking for a vacation away from the masses that is also distant and private. Peace and tranquility can be found in this part of the country. People who are looking for an experience that is unique and will stick with them forever will find the region to be ideal.
- The Westfjords are famous for the rich variety of birdlife that can be seen there, including eagles, puffins, and guillemots, among other species. In addition, visitors may see whales, seals, and reindeer while they are in the region.
- Outdoor recreation: The Westfjords are home to a wide range of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including walking, climbing, skiing, sea kayaking, and fishing.
- The Westfjords are home to a large number of traditional Icelandic settlements of a small size, and tourists can get a feel for the region’s history and culture by paying a visit to the region’s museums, attending folk music performances, and experiencing traditional turf houses.
- People often go to Iceland’s Westfjords, which are thought to have some of the best conditions in the country, to look for the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis. Because this place is far from any city lights and has a clear view of the night sky, it is a great place to watch the northern lights above the mountains and the fjords during the winter.
- You will have an entirely different experience of areas of West Iceland and the Westfjords if you travel along the recently established path known as The Westfjords Way. It is a 950-kilometer circuit that will introduce you to a world that will leave you in amazement.
