The Icelandic Hut On The Heath In The Westfjords

Those who drive over the mountain road Steingrimsfjardarheidi know the old hut at the top of the mountain road. When the old hut appears, the path goes downhill in either direction. The top is reached.

The hut itself is not remarkable and I do not know its history but I do know that it was renovated a few years ago. It is not a sanctuary for travelers and, as far as I understand, has no role.

What I find remarkable about this old hut is that it stands there in its solitude on a vast heath where barren wilderness is the landscape and endless expanses of snow in winter.

I think the hut is actually the most beautiful in the winter. This heath is usually never calm and rapids are common as the wind blows the snow across the wilderness until some obstacle is found. The hut is one obstacle.

These snowdrifts in front of the hut make it so beautiful that you have to stop and take a picture of it when you are lucky enough to get sunshine at the top of the hill.
