Tourism is a relatively recent industry, considering the turnover and number of tourists. In 1999, 519,000 tourists came to the country. In 2018, almost 3 million passengers passed through Keflavík Airport. As can be seen from these figures, the growth has been enormous this century, and now, with the completion of Covid-19, a new period of growth in tourism is ahead.
There has also been a large increase in the number of cruise ships arriving in Iceland. In 1984, more than 7,000 passengers came to Reykjavík Harbor on cruise ships.
