Because of the Covid-19 Icelanders will mostly travel domestically this year and are encouraged to do so by the authorities with specialized initiatives.
One initiative comes in the form of cash payment of ISK 5000 available to all Icelanders 18 years or older with domicile in Iceland. People can spend the money on travel related services such as accommodation and recreation.
The money is distributed via app or bar codes with the additional option that people can give their cash to others as well. The amount is not high but it is a significant gesture by the government welcomed by the travel industry and customers.
Another initiative are advertisements in Icelandic media to encourage people to travel. Additionally regions and municipalities are also advertising a lot trying to lure travellers to spend their time and money in their area.
